“Coming to a theater near you” will take on a new meaning for the residents of Albertville, because the city has partnered with Drinkard Development to build a Lucas Cinema Theatre complex in the vicinity of Horsley Road and U.S. Highway 431.

The proposed theater development will be located across the street from Beck Plaza — which is where Shepherd’s Cove Thrift Shoppe relocated — according to Albertville Economic Development Director Mike Price.

“We are really pleased to have this project coming to Albertville,” Price said. “This theater project surfaced a few years ago, and many parties have been involved in seeing it become a reality — a big thank you goes to Drinkard Development, the Albertville City Council, the City of Albertville Commercial Development Authority, Jim Lucas and Jim Zehr from Lucas Cinemas, the mayor’s office and everyone else who has had a hand in this project. It is an exciting project for the city, and it will be a huge quality of life enhancement, not only for our city but the surrounding area as well.”

Drinkard Development Director of Lease Administration Jason Grimmett, who has been in his role for 19 years, said the Cullman-based company looks forward to coming to Albertville.

“On behalf of Drinkard Development, we are extremely excited to become a part of the Albertville community,” Grimmett said. “We have been looking closely for an opportunity to grow our company in our neighboring Marshall County for many years. The right opportunity has come to light in Albertville. For nearly two years we have been working to put together a theatre project. We have the right site, the right theatre operators in Lucas Cinemas, the right timing for the industry and right leadership with the City of Albertville. Mayor Tracy Honea and his team have led the way in Albertville for a tremendous amount of growth. We at Drinkard Development are pleased to announce the development of a state-of-the-art, 10-screen Lucas Cinema Theatre complete with reclining seats. We expect to break ground within the next 90 days with an approximate construction phase of 10 - 12 months. This will be a theatre that the community and all of Marshall County will be proud of.”

According to Grimmett, Drinkard Development has been developing retail centers, government buildings, residential properties and theaters for more than 50 years under the leadership of Drinkard Development President Roy H. Drinkard, who is preparing for his 100th birthday in July of 2020.

Albertville Mayor Tracy Honea said the partnership with Drinkard has been a goal for quite some time.“Couldn’t be happier to have this development happening in the City of Albertville,” Honea said. “The city has looked for opportunities to partner with Drinkard Development for some time now. I have so much respect for Mr. Roy Drinkard and all that he has accomplished in his years on this earth. Mr. Drinkard has ties back to the City of Albertville as far back as the 1940s — so it just always seemed like a natural fit for him to do this project in this city. I am really excited to see this development come to life and know it will have a big impact on the lives of our citizens.”
